Two men were injured in an armed robbery at a fast food restaurant in Speke.
An off-duty police officer and a store security guard were commended for their bravery after they arrested a man following the robbery at the McDonalds in Speke Retail Park last night.
At about 7.45pm two men, one armed with a hammer, went into the store and demanded money from a female member of staff at the serving counter.
One of the men then walked round to the back of the counter, whilst the other stayed in front of the counter and hit it with the hammer.
The offender who had walked round the back of the counter hit two male members of staff before demanding that a female member of staff open the till.
After getting a small amount of cash from the till the men escaped out of the restaurant, but they were spotted by an off-duty police officer, who was in his car, and a security man from a nearby store.
They both chased the offenders and managed to catch one of the males, who was arrested on suspicion of robbery.
DCI Chris Sephton, said: “This was a particularly nasty robbery. The offenders walked in to the busy restaurant just four days before Christmas and had a complete disregard for the staff and customers, including young children, who were in there.
“As well as causing fear within the store, two members of staff were assaulted even though they had shown no resistance.
“Both members of staff were treated by the ambulance service at the scene.
“The man arrested is a 21-year-old man from Speke and I am fairly confident that the other male may be from the Speke area.
“I would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to come forward so we can take positive action.”
He added: “I would also like to take this opportunity to commend the security guard and off-duty officer for the bravery in chasing armed offenders, who had already assaulted two members of staff in the store without provocation. Through their prompt actions one man has been arrested.”
One of the offenders was wearing a black jacket and black trousers.
The other male, who is still outstanding, was wearing a grey hooded top, with a dark coloured padded and hooded gilet with a red zip over it, and dark coloured trousers.
