A man police said was overheard planning to commit a theft inside a McDonald’s restaurant was arrested after he struck a Mesa police officer with a motorcycle helmet Monday night.
Oscar Alejandro Garcia, 23, was overheard planning the theft but began to leave the restaurant at 398 N. Hibbert before officers stopped him near the parking lot about 11:15 p.m., said Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato.
Garcia was released, but then jumped into the path of a patrol car, though he was not hit or injured, Landato said.
This time, officers cited Garcia, who turned and swung the helmet at the officer’s car and scuffed a headlight, Landato said.
Officers then told Garcia he was under arrest for attempted criminal damage and he swung his helmet and struck an officer in the side. He was finally taken into custody after a struggle with officers.
No officers were hurt.
Compounding matters, Landato said, was a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun that fell from Garcia’s waistband during the struggle.
