NEWARK — Essex County Sheriff’s officers arrested five men and seized multiple weapons after stopping a pair of stolen cars on Sunday and Monday nights, officials said.
Kelvin Vega, 22, of Newark, was arrested after a lengthy pursuit on Monday night and charged with resisting arrest, eluding, receiving stolen property and several weapons and drug offenses after he allegedly fled from officers who tried to stop him in a McDonald’s parking lot near Frelinghuysen Avenue, said Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
Vega was driving a 1995 Mercedes that had been reported stolen two nights before, Fontoura said, and he sped away from officers who tried to stop him in a parking lot on Monday night.
The 22-year-old allegedly ran several red lights along Elizabeth Avenue before crashing into a parked car near the intersection of Hunterdon Street and Watson Avenue, Fontoura said. He was captured after a brief foot pursuit, and officers recovered a loaded .45 caliber handgun and several tablets of Xanax and ecstasy from inside the car, police said.
One night earlier, sheriff’s officers stopped a 2002 Acura that was driving at a high rate of speed on South 18th Street around 6 p.m., and noticed it was reported stolen. Officers pulled the car over and found the driver to be in possession of a 15-inch hatchet.
The driver was arrested for weapons possession and several outstanding warrants, Fontoura said. The three teenage passengers were also charged with receiving stolen property, Fontoura said.
